WHAT PARTNERS SAY ABOUT US
Here’s a look at what partners are saying about working with us.
The Kivulini Fund supports pastoral communities in the grasslands of northern Kenya to maintain their cultural and natural heritage and realize their aspirations for positive change. The organization works with the Turkana, Gabbra, Boran, Rendille, El-Molo, Burji, Somali, Garri, Samburu, Waata, Saakuyye, Daasanach, and Konso peoples of the region, which encompasses over 100,000 square kilometers of beautiful arid and semi-arid lands.
The Fund values and strives to strengthen the communities’ capacity to effectively revive, practice, document, promote, and transmit their cultural heritage. Kivulini’s programs focus primarily on
(1) promoting and celebrating cultural diversity,
(2) environmental management centered on rich Indigenous knowledge and traditional institutions,
(3) supporting local livelihood strategies that include pastoralism, fishing, and handicrafts, and
(4) strengthening social cohesion and community interactions built around existing shared social and cultural heritage.
Currently, Kivulini works with nine communities in northern Kenya. On a broader regional scale, Kivulini works on land issues, particularly securing community grazing resources threatened by development projects. In all areas where it operates, the Kivulini Fund has involved local community groups, especially women, to participate in promoting cultural expression, resource governance, and sustainable livelihoods.
